The Taoiseach has praised the Pope for his statement on homosexuality.
Leo Varadkar said he believes Pope Francis is pushing back against certain elements within the Catholic Church.
The pontiff said homosexuality is not a crime, but did say it was a sin under the same Catholic moral teaching which says sex outside marriage is a sin.
But Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has praised the Pope for the comments:
" I think it was very welcome. I think Pope Francis is a very progressive Pope. He believes in a church that that is open to people. And I think often he's pushing back against other forces within the church within the Catholic Church that are much more conservative. And I think his comments were, you know, extremely welcome and sent a message out to bishops across the world that they should welcome LGBT people."
