Tánaiste says he can't guarantee households won't be €5,000 worse off a year if prices continue to rise

A study by Kantar found grocery price inflation has hit 11% and is at its highest level since May 2008 while the Irish Daily Mail reports grocery bills are up by €768 a year.

Leo Varadkar says the Government will address this in the Budget:

"Everyone's personal circumstances are different and the 5,000 figure is based on certain assumptions. And I hope that doesn't turn out to be true but no one nobody can say it won't. If you look at any household budget, it has three elements to it. One is how much you get paid. Second is how much you get to keep after tax. And the third is how far does the money go? And we want to help with all three."
