Students will be able to study Ukrainian for the Leaving Cert from next year.
Education Minister Norma Foley has confirmed those entering fifth year in September 2023 can sit the exam, according to the Irish Times.
It'll be made available as a non-curricular subject and aimed primarily at native speakers who've fled Ukraine after the outbreak of war.
5 thousand 200 Ukrainian refugees have been enrolled in Irish secondary schools since February 2020, with 100 Ukrainian secondary school teachers also registered with the Teaching Council.
