A status yellow high temperature alert is now in place across the country.
Temperatures are expected to reach 28 degrees today as the heatwave moves up a gear.
The weather alert runs until Tuesday night, with temperatures climbing into the early 30s over the next few days.
Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather says the nights will also be be very warm and humid:
"A very warm night overnight tonight and then even higher temperatures tomorrow, Monday, with temperatures possibly reaching as high as 31 or even 32 degrees. Again warmest in the east and in the midlands, but temperatures really widely in the high 20s right across the country".
