February 1st marks Brigid's Day, celebrating a woman who is believed to have founded monasteries for men and women in Kildare in the 5th Century.

However for many, it is also seen as the beginning of Spring, with the evenings getting brighter and longer.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather says we're still in Winter, though:

"And we have to look at it purely from a statistical point of view. February is certainly one of the three polls this month. And that's why for elite logical point of view, it is still very much winter. And we have on occasion even in recent years seen how we can certainly see some wintry weather in February and it's actually often the best month for seeing snowfall in Ireland. So it is very much a winter's month when it comes to weather."
