Social Housing Waiting lists will be dominated by older people without a home if nothing changes.
For the first time ever, more than 2,000 people over 70 years old were placed on the social housing waiting list.
ALONE CEO Sean Moynihan says higher percentages of social housing needs to be developed for an ageing population of Ireland:
"We've got to realise that if you lose your private rented housing in old age, it's very hard to get back in. You're very unattractive to private landlords, and ultimately you're on fixed incomes and you probably can't play high premium rents. So the reality is that older people, because houses are coming out of private rental, and because of the ageing population, are going to start domination the social housing waiting lists".
