Mothers of children born though surrogates have no legal relationship with their child which is causing chaos for schooling, healthcare and other aspects of life.
That's according to Fine Gael Senator Mary Seery-Kearney, who has called on the Government to update the laws to recognise the mother or second father.
Currently, the biological father is the only recognised parent from the family which is receiving the baby from the surrogate mother.
Senator Seery-Kearney says that is separating some children from a parent in the eyes of the law:
"In the State at this moment, there are children who, because of the means of their conception and birth, and because it involves surrogacy, they are denied the legal relationship with both of their parents, and in many instances that is their mothers or their second fathers. Only their biological father has a recognised lifelong legal relationship with them under the current family law in Ireland".
