Road users are urged to use extreme caution on the roads this morning following heavy rain overnight.

An Orange Weather Warning is in place for Cork until midnight tomorrow, with torrential rain and thundery downpours expected.

Both City and County Councils are warning motorists to expect spot flooding on low lying areas and in areas that are prone to flash floods.

No flooding has been reported in the city or county this morning, however Met Eireann say that heavy or thundery downpours will continue with drier weather developing in most parts during the day.

Further falls of heavy or thundery rain will develop through the evening and early night.

The Road Safety Authority are also advising people not to drive through any floods they may encounter and say the water may appear shallower than it really is.

Speaking to RedFM News, Brian Farrell from the RSA has this advice for anyone on the roads this morning:

"If you try and drive through flooded roads, you could end up getting stranded, you could end up destroying the engine of your car and more importantly, you could end up diverting emergency service. On wet roads, there's a danger of aquaplaning on those higher speed roads like motorways and dual carriageways so it's so important therefore to slow down and leave extra space between yourself and the vehicle in front."
