Researchers are suggesting hormone replacement therapy might help prevent Alzheimer's disease in women who are at risk of developing it.
They say the use of HRT, which helps control symptoms of menopause - is associated with better memory in women who carry a specific gene.
Professor Anne-Marie Minihane led the study - she says the therapy was most effective when given during peri-menopause:
"It does seem to be kind of an accelerated loss of brain function as we go through the menopause. So we don't know for sure yet, but actually the changes that occurred through the menopause may well contribute to the fact that two thirds of Alzheimer's patients are female".
