Providing emergency surgery on a 24/7 basis should end in a number of hospitals to protect patients, according to a new report.
The Royal College of Surgeons says emergency surgery is safest when performed during normal working hours.
The report recommends an overhaul of how emergency services are organised, with the setting up of hospital networks and more surgeons working across more than one site.
