A quarter of older renters expect to remain in the private rental sector for life.
Joint research by Threshold and ALONE found 42 per cent of respondents experience high stress levels renting in the private sector.
Lack of security of tenure and affordability were the main concerns for private renters.
Ann-Marie O’Reilly, National Advocacy Manager with Threshold, says the findings indicate a poor outlook for older and ageing renters across Ireland.
"We're seeing this growing number of people renting who are likely going to be renting for the rest of their lives. And we can see quite clearly that the private rental sector is not in a position to provide secure sustainable homes. And that really comes out very, very strongly in the research highlighting its inadequacies and it lends itself then to the title that there's deficits in the private rental sector."
