The public is being warned to stay safe on the coast this Bank Holiday Monday.

The Coastguard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland say anyone taking part in water activities needs to plan ahead.

Alcohol contributes to around one third of drownings in Ireland.

RNLI Water Safety Education Manager, Killian O'Kelly, has this advice when heading out to sea:

"Check the weather and the tide before going out on any trips on the coast. Check your lifejacket, and check all your equipment. If it's your first time going out on the coast for the year, which it often is this time of year, check your engine, check that your lifejacket has been serviced, and that all your safety equipment is working correctly".
