The United Nations initiative will raise awareness of drowning, which kills over 235,000 people each year around the world.

It comes as there has been six drownings this week across the island of Ireland.

An average of 115 people drown here annually - although that number is falling.

Gerard O'Flynn from the Irish Coast Guard says there are measures people can take to ensure their safety:

"We have identifies three areas of risk that are important with regard to safety at sea and on the water. One, never ever use inflatable toys on open water. The second one is, we've asked all user of jet skis to stay away from areas that are being used by swimmers. The third area is, never swim alone; always go with somebody else, or make sure that somebody ashore is observing you."
