Postmasters will tell an Oireachtas Committee later the Post Office Network is at a "critical juncture" and in desperate need of government support.

The Irish Postmasters Union will tell TD's and Senators that €12m in annual funding is needed to prevent "large scale" closures.

873 of the 918 branches across the country are run by self-employed postmasters.

Chair of the Transport Committee, Kieran O'Donnell, says it's a vital service that needs to be protected.

"We must ensure that network can survive, it must be a sutainiable network.

"Obviously to ensure that can happen it must be financially viable for postmasters up and down the country to be able to operate in a sustainable manner.

"This will obviously require supports for additional service that they can provide.

"We want to go into detail on that with Ned O'Hara and his colleagues in the National Postmasters Union."
