Politicians will meet at Stormont today to try and form a new power sharing executive in the North.

It's after Sinn Fein became the first nationalist party to win the most votes in an election to the Assembly.

The party secured 27 seats to defeat the Democratic Unionist Party which won't help restore power sharing until its issues with the protocol are met.

Sinn Fein Donegal TD Padraig MacLochlainn says it's vital the parties form a new government to deliver for the electorate:

"I think that it's important that everybody who sought election to the assembly respects the democratic wishes of the people, and that they form an executive, they form a government that delivers on the huge issues that people face.

"And of course, as we know from the election campaign, it's the need to invest in the health service, and there's a three year budget that needs to be voted in."
