A member of the Pension Commission says the Minister for Social Protection's plans for higher payments are a "bad idea".

Under the scheme which is set to be unveiled today, those who work until the age of 70 will benefit from a higher state pension of 315 euro a week.

It's aimed at keeping more people in work for longer and ending the political row over retirement age.

The commission recommended raising the pension age to 68 and member John McGrane is not impressed by Heather Humphreys plans.

"The only way we can fund it is through contributions from people who are in work, and the employers who employ them.

"The reality is we would have to charge more to employ people, and that is a bad idea because what we are trying to do here is keep people working to fund the system."
