116 motorists were pulled over for driving under the influence of drink or drugs in the past week alone.

The Gardaí also caught almost 2,000 people speeding, 158 people using their phone, and 48 for driving without a seatbelt.

This year's Christmas and New Year Road Safety Campaign is urging motorists to be sensible when driving.

Cork's RedFM has also teamed up with the Road Safety Authority and the Gaelic Players Association this Christmas reminding motorists to reduce their speed and stay focused on the road ahead.

Inspector Ross O'Doherty, from the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau, is urging drivers not to drink and drive over the festive season:

"Where people are thinking they are ok to drive after being out the night before, my advice would be that if there's any doubt in your mind as to whether or not you're over the legal limit consider that you are and don't drive the vehicle to the alternative means of transport."
