Nurses and midwives in the country's public hospitals will be balloted on industrial action next month.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation claims the government has failed to return to protracted negotiations on the current public sector pay deal with a favourable offer.
The INMO says the decision to ballot nurses and midwives was not taken lightly, but they've been left with very little choice.
