The number of people who can vote in Seanad elections could dramatically change ahead of the next vote.

Higher Education Minister Simon Harris has said he wants to expand voting to include graduates of all third level institutions.

It's something that was approved in a referendum in the 1970s but hasn't been acted on since.

Minister Simon Harris says he'll discuss reforms with Government colleagues:

"I think there's a willingness this could happen before the next Seanad election. This requires legislation to be brought forward to both the Dáil and the Seanad. We clearly have a very strong mandate from the people of Ireland to do this - a mandate that is now 43 years old. And I think it's just right and proper now we get on with discharging the instruction of the people of Ireland, which was to make this happen. That's what the people of Ireland told us in 1979. It's high time this now happens."
