The boss of P & O Ferries has confirmed workers, who're replacing 800 staff sacked last week, will be paid as little as £5.15 an hour.
Peter Hebblethwaite has confirmed the figure in evidence to a committee of British MPs investigating if the redundancies were legal.
He says without the redundancies, P & O Ferries was going to close.
Peter Hebblethwaite confirmed unions were not consulted before staff were dismissed without notice - but says they'll be compensated.
"For somebody who started work with us in the last month or so, actually we've said that we will pay a minimum of 15,000 pounds. So we've uncapped the top, and we've absolutely said as a minimum, we will pay 15,000 pounds we recognise, we did a very, very difficult thing"
