A new half hourly bus service connecting commuters from Kinsale to Bishopstown is to get underway in January.

West Cork Connect has stepped into the breach after a campaign was launched to improve the 226 service after commuters complained of finding themselves frequently abandoned by full or overbooked buses.

In the last week Bus Eireann ran a double decker on the 226 route addressing some of the capacity issues but still leaving some stranded at bus stops particularly at peak times.

West Cork Connects has now announced that from January the 228 service will run on the half hour in the mornings and evenings to take pressure off the 226 route.

Damien Long from West Cork Connects told RedFM News that he believes the service will be a game changer for commuters.

"We have people in the office monitoring numbers, so if we have 50 seats sold in teime we just put on a second bus, and a third bus and a fourth bus, whatever it takes on the day to take the people in.

"We don't leave people behind at the bus stops, our job is to get is to transport people. And that's what we do.

"We have the systems in place, and when people book online, we know when it's going to be busy."
