New guidelines will force sporting organisations in Ireland to have a female representation at board level of at least 40%.

The new document from the government and Sport Ireland lists new criteria for bodies to receive funding.

€25 million has been announced in a new round of funding, with most bodies getting an increase.

Junior sports minister Jack Chambers says boards of these organisations need to be balanced, in order to allow women's sport to continue to grow:

"We've seen phenomenal growth in women's sport over the last number of years with from grassroots all the way up to like Leona Maguire and Ellen Keane and we want to really see that momentum continue, but I think for that to happen, we need to see it within the leadership structures that the boards are reflected with proper female representation."
