The Housing Minster's being warned against 'watering-down' the ban on evictions.

Legislation will go before the Dail today which seeks to extend renter protections into the summer - it was to expire on April 12th.

However, Threshold says the new bill will only extend protections for renters who're in arrears because of Covid-19 and who've alerted the Residential Tenancies Board.

CEO of the housing charity, John Mark McCafferty, says the Minister should consider the implications of the proposed change.

"Removing certain renters from that protection seems to run contrary to that public health aim, and in doing so the government is creating a risk of these families and individuals losing their homes and possibly entering emergency accommodation - and that's when we're being told not to leave our homes."
