A new Cyber Safe Kids survey shows being left out of group chats and receiving hurtful messages are the most common form.

Almost a third of 8 to 12 year olds who've seen disturbing content online have kept it to themselves.

Alex Cooney, CEO of Cyber Safe Kids, says online safety needs to be a core subject on the school curriculum:

"It should be given equal priority with some of these other core topics because children are spending so much of their lives online and they're not being adequately prepared for that journey. And it's really fundamental that they're given the digital literacy skills, skills and understanding that they're going to need in their future lives in education. And yes, it means we're going to have to have the teacher training and the resources, but it is such a core subject these days that it's really important that every child benefits from a good education on it."
