Medical expert says lockdown drinking caused 30% rise in liver disease hospital admissions

A medical expert says excessive drinking during lockdown caused a 30 per cent rise in hospital admissions for liver disease.Professor John Ryan from Beaumont Hospital in Dublin says admissions jumped in the first five months of the year compared to the same period in 2020.He says the problem was caused by a rise in alcohol consumption:

"That's definitely seen in other centres like in the Mater, they see the same king in the States. They've seen the same thing. And this is, you know, whatever 18 months on from the original lockdown, so it's kind of coming through, a lot of it I believe and I know is related to alcohol."
