Mary Immaculate College in Limerick is calling for more young men to consider a career as a school teacher.
It has launched a campaign to encourage male school-leavers to think about teaching as a profession.
The Teaching Council of Ireland says there are almost 45,000 female teachers, while 8,626 are male.
The General Secretary of Education and Training Boards Ireland has welcomed the campaign as a positive move.
