A trade union representing retail and hospitality workers says it's an employer's responsibility to pay staff decent wages.

The Mandate Trade Union is appearing before the Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment, along with representatives from the Low Pay Commission.

The minimum wage is due to increase by 80 cent, to €11.30 an hour from the first of January next.

Yesterday, a series of measures to address the rising cost of living energy prices were announced in the budget.

However, General Secretary of Mandate Trade Union and Founding Chair of the Low Pay Commission, Gerry Light, says companies have a duty to pay their staff properly.
