Man who died in Ballybunion drowning identified

A man in his 50s who died in a double drowning in Kerry yesterday has been named locally.

Dessie Byrne, who is originally from Ballybay in Athlone but has been living in Roscommon, drowned yesterday evening.

His older sister, who has an address in Sweden, was also pronounced dead at the scene at Men’s Beach in Ballybunion.

A post mortem is due to be carried out on both of their bodies.

TD Michael Healy Rae says the local community in Kerry is reeling from the tragedy:

"I have been speaking to locals since yesterday evening and the shock and the disappointment and upset is overbearing at present in in all of county carry. We warmly welcome people in Kerry County every day, and when a tragedy like this occurs, it's absolutely heartbreaking."
