A 40-year-old man is being medically assessed after spending almost 22 hours stranded in a sea cave in Co Mayo.

The man, a Polish national, got stuck on a ledge in a cave at Downpatrick Head, after being swept into the area during high tide on Saturday evening.

He was dramatically rescued yesterday evening and transferred to Sligo University Hospital, where he's currently being treated.

Local Photo journalist Fergus Sweeney says everyone is delighted with the outcome.

"Obviously there had been a gathering of people here at Downpatrick Head, some people who had been involved in the rescue since yesterday evening, so there were scenes of people hugging and clapping, delighted the man had been taken safely from the cave and brought to hospital;

"I think everybody involved here is delighted with the outcome, and the fact they got this man safely out of the cave."
