Letterkenny University Hospital has moved to a Major Emergency Situation following an explosion at a petrol station in Donegal.

The facility says it is treating a number of people with immediate needs following the incident at around 4pm this afternoon in Creeslough.

Footage online appears to show wreckage to a petrol station, shop and block of apartments.

Emergency services are at the scene and are being assisted by members of the coastguard.

Chris McNulty of the Donegal Democrat says the village would've been very busy at the time:

"Creeslough is an extremely busy, busy town. It's sort of the gateway to Northwest Donegal, to towns like Dunfanaghy, Falcarragh and Gweedore. You know, areas where people would be returning for, particularly of a time like that, at three o'clock on a Friday afternoon. Not to mention people commuting from work and from schools and stuff. It would be a particularly busy area and a particularly busy location at that time".

Emergency services have reportedly been rescuing people from the rubble - and the nearby Letterkenny University Hospital is urging the public not to come to the emergency department.

Donegal County Councillor John O'Donnell is at the scene:

"The whole entire building - the front of building is completely blown off it. The apartment block up above as well, living accommodation above - so I'm not sure not sure if there was anybody residing in that".
