Macra na Feirme is calling for a farmers' right to build on their own land to be protected.

It comes ahead of the release of the new Rural Housing Guidelines, which are expected to be published in October.

The rural youth organisation says there are issues across the country, where sons and daughters of farmers are being denied planning permission for a number of reasons.

President of Macra, John Keane, says farmers need to reside close to where they work, especially during calving season:

"I think the practicalities from somebody who was experiencing it, who would have to travel in and out of town versus somebody who may not be experienced in what it's like to travel back in and out at  2 and 3 and 4 o'clock in the morning, to work - numerous times during the night. You know, take a walk in someone else's shoes for a few weeks to see what that experience is actually like before telling people that this is what they need to do".
