The Lord Mayor of the city says a Portuguese style approach to dealing with drug possession and drug addiction could work here.
Councillor Deirdre Forde is currently in Lisbon with members of the Gardaí and the HSE to speak about tackling drug addiction issues.
Portugal have changed their laws so that a person who has a problem with drug use, will recieve health care treatment instead of being dealth with through the courts
Speaking to RedFM News, Lord Mayor of the City, Councillor Deirdre Forde says she thinks it could work here:
"Obviously, somebody who was importing a huge number of drugs into our city will go to jail, you know, but for people who are on the lower rung of the ladder who are unfortunately addicted to drugs, apparently the new thinking now is to treat this as a health led approach. Now, we're not experts in this and that's why we're coming out here, because that's the type of approach they're using in Portugal."
