Leo Varadkar has been elected as Taoiseach for the second time.

The Fine Gael leader had a majority of the Dáil vote for him after Micheál Martin resigned this morning.

A majority of TDs in the Dáil backed him - by 87 votes to 62 - marking the first time Fianna Fáil deputies have voted for a Fine Gael Taoiseach

In his acceptance speech Varadkar will mention building on the work of his immediate predecessor and soon to be Tánaiste Micheál Martin - particularly when it comes to housing which will be the defining issue for the next term of Government.

He'll now travel to the Aras to meet President Michael D Higgins and get his seal of office, before returning to Government Buildings to begin reforming the Cabinet
