A leading child psychotherapist is reminding Leaving Cert students that downtime is as important as study leading up to exam.

The state examinations begin on Wednesday with the class of 2022 mostly returning to a pre-pandemic in-person schedule.

Support groups are encouraging pupils to keep an eye on their mental health with stress levels starting to soar across the country.

Teen behaviour expert Ray Langan says sometimes you need to switch your brain off to keep it in check for the big day:

"Downtime is as important as uptime. Going out for a walk, sitting with your parents for 20 minutes, having a chat, putting onto a comedy or your favourite TV show for 30 minutes - it just unplugs your brain. If you're in two exams, that's five hours where your brain is on. That takes a lot of energy".
