A law aimed at reducing the pay gap between men and women was approved by the Dáil last night.

It will force companies with over 250 staff to publish the details of their employees' pay, extending to those with over 50 staff over time.

They will be required to explain the reasons for any gender pay differences.

Equality Minister Roderic O'Gorman says the bill is now going to the President for final approval.

"Pay transparency on its own will not the pay dispairty between men and women, but it is an important further step on the roads towards equality.

"This bill will provide transparency and accountability for employees, it will demand of employers real and substantive action to reduce any gender pay disparity that exists within their organisation."
