It could be October before students see the inside of lecture halls if the date for Leaving Cert results isn't brought forward, according to the Labour Party.
It says September 3rd is too late, and is calling on the Education Minister to consider the more traditional mid-August release instead.
The party says the decision will delay the start of the academic year and create more anxiety for students.
Labour Party education spokesperson, Aodhan O'Riordain, says it's not acceptable.
"if you get your Leaving Cert results on Friday the 3rd of September, you can't expect your CAO offer until the very earliest Monday or Tuesday of the next week, and that pushes the timelines that have already been set down by third level institutions further out.
"It may be October before students see the inside of a lecture hall or a campus."
