The Executive Committee of the Irish Federation of University Teachers has decided to ballot its members for industrial action.
The ballot will take place in September unless the government reaches an agreement with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions on pay in the meantime.
With inflation now at 9.1% the Federation believes a realistic offer must be made to combat the impact the rise in the cost of living is having on members’ earnings.
Spokesperson Miriam Hamilton says her 3,000 members are being left with no option due to the cost of living crisis.
