The Irish Council for Civil Liberties is opposing the Garda Commissioner's proposal to give frontline Gardai tasers
The idea was initially floated after the Dublin Riots of 2023 with Gardai wanting more protection while on the beat.
The ICCL's Emily Williams says there could be unintended consequences if they are brought in.
"Although they're described as non lethal, they do have very devastating health effects.
"International research has shown that the use of tasers can cause burns, muscle damage and cardiac arrythmia.
"In Ireland where Gardai are largely unarmed except for in certain circumstances, it could be viewed as escalation to introduce tasers."
