The Irish Cancer Society is welcoming the abolition of the public inpatient charge.

The government approved the measure which will see the charge of €80 per day coming to an end in all public hospitals.

Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly said he intends to bring the legislation through the Houses of the Oireachtas as a priority in the coming weeks.

Director of Advocacy at the Irish Cancer Society Rachel Morrogh says its abolition will come as a relief for those with a cancer diagnosis.

"The decision to approve legislation that will abolish hospital charges will help to relieve some of the very significant financial pressures caused by cancer diagnoses.

"While getting rid of the €80 per visit charge will help people financially, it will also mean an end to the use of debt collectors, who were hired to chase payment."
