A new report has revealed that one of the next five years will be the hottest on record.
The World Meteorological Organization says faster warming at the poles means that extra heat is being smeared across the globe with the coldest parts becoming warmer quicker.
Their report found that Antartica is not warming as fast as the Artic as if this happened the world would see a dramatic and rapid rise in sea levels.
Speaking to RedFM News Dr Chris Mays a lecturer in Palaeontology at UCC says we can expect to see hotter and drier summers.
"These are the things we're much more likely to see going forward, hotter drier summers, milder winters.
"One of the key things we can do in Ireland is keep an eye on those dry periods. We're in a unique position in the world, more or less, in that we have these large peatlands that are very good at keeping carbon in the ground and preventing it from getting into the atmosphere.
"If we can keep these wet and prevent them from drying out then that would be very helpful in the long run and really help us meet our own climate targets."
