Gardai in Co. Kerry have launched an investigation into the discovery of the body of a woman in her 70's at her home outside Killarney.

They're said to be treating the death of the pensioner as 'unexplained', and are waiting for post mortem results to determine the course of their investigation.

She's been named locally as Miriam Burns, a 75 year old Grandmother and Mother of four.

The scene remains sealed off for a full technical and forensic examination.

Ralph Riegel, southern Correspondent for the Irish Independent says the housing estate, where the woman's body was found, is very quiet.

"It's a very mature, established housing estate. You have a lot of elderly people there, and older families there.

"It's a very quiet residential area, located only walking distance from the outlet centre in Killarney, and a short walk from shops, restaurants and the train station.

"Locals are very shocked because they just don't see this sort of thing on their doorstep."
