The number of Gardai quitting the force early has increased by a quarter in the past five years.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee says there were 77 in 2018 - rising to 95 last year.

There have been almost 400 premature resignations since 2018, with 86 so far this year.

Aontu leader Peadar Tóibín says many gardai quit because of poor working conditions.

"I have no doubt that overwork and stress are causing major difficulties for the Gardai.

"I know in certain parts of the country there may only be 5 Gardai working on a given day, and that may be leading to the fact that Gardai are under pressure and are being pulled in every single direction.

"There are also considerable threats now towards Gardai with regards health and safety."
