Illegal cigarettes seized by Revenue up 26%

The amount of illegal cigarettes seized by Revenue increased by 26% last year.

According to freedom of information files, nearly €44m worth were recovered in 2021.

In 2020, just over over 48,000,000 illicit cigarettes were seized by Revenue, valued at €32.8m.

Last year nearly 61,000,000 were recovered, and they were worth €43.6m.

80% of last year's were seized in Dublin, amounting to nearly 49,000,000 cigarettes.

736,000 were recovered in Westmeath, with 456,000 in Monaghan.

Today is National No Smoking Day - Dr Paul Kavanagh is from the HSE's Tobacco Free Ireland programme.

"One in two people who smoke on an ongoing basis, they will die from that habit.

"Each year in Ireland. Over 100 people die each week from smoking."

He's calling on people to log on to quit.ie or call 1800 201 203 to get help in kicking the habit.
