The Housing Minister says he expects a tax on vacant homes to come into effect by the end of next year.
The 'Housing For All' plan, launched by the Government, states a new Vacant Property Tax will be introduced to ensure empty properties are used.
Homeowners will receive communication around the new valuations next month as part of the Local Property Tax review.
It had been believed the first payment may be collected in 2023, but Minister O'Brien says they're trying to bring forward the scheme:
"It'll be the end of next year, I would expect, and the reason for that is that the Local Property Tax review legislation passed the Dáil just before the summer recess. Every home will be written out to for the new valuations in October. We'll have all the data back in November. Minister Paschal Donoghue then, because it's a Department of Finance tax, will bring forward the legislation to bring forward a Vacant Home Tax."
