The Housing Minister says cost of living measures, set to be introduced by the government in the coming months, will be targeted.
His comments come amid calls for a double child benefit payment to help struggling households.
A decision on what supports will be provided in the months ahead will be discussed by coalition party leaders this evening.
Minister O'Brien urged renters who are struggling to avail of a 500 tax credit introduced in the budget, which he says will be provided annually until 2025:
"We'll make that decision within the next two weeks of exactly what that looks like. But I think when you look at the energy supports that we've given the additional social welfare payments that we've made right through the winter, we said we protect families through the winter and we've done that. Now we need to reassess that to make sure that the measures we bring forward are targeted, again to repeat the wrenches tax credit didn't exist. We pushed hard for that, that is in place now. And that is something that will remain for the rest of the term of this Government."
