The leader of the Social Democrats Holly Cairns says the Government has no credibility on housing as it refuses to learn from past mistakes.
The Cork South West TD was speaking in the Dail on her party's motion on Home Ownership.
She told the Dail that young people once aspired to home ownership but now they are finding it increasingly difficult to to get out of their childhood bedrooms.
Deputy Cairns say the rate and extent of the decline in home ownership among young people has been rapid and stark and is having a devastating impact.
The Government says home ownership is already a priority however there's an acknowledgment that there is a need for an increase in home ownership and they are working to remedy that with the long term solution to increase supply.
However Holly Cairns says under current Government policy - rents, house prices and homelessness numbers have never been higher.
"The government has no credibility on housing, because you refuse to learn the lessons from your mistakes.
"All of the important metrics tell you that the housing crisis is deteriorating. rents have never been higher, house prices have never been higher, homelessness has never been higher. But you refuse to change course.
"You continue to rely on the private sector to deliver social and affordable homes. You continue to pour subsidies into the pockets of developers and investment funds. When will the government change its disastrous policies?"
