The head of Water Safety Ireland says 600 new high-tech lifebuoys will help save lives.
The smart devices, which are being installed by rivers, canals and beaches, will alert local authorities when ring buoys have been stolen or vandalised.
The pilot includes Dublin, as well as Meath, Laois, Sligo and Leitrim.
