Greyhound racing bosses have launched a fightback to what it claims is an attempt to damage its reputation.

The government has faced calls to cut State funding to the industry, following revelations in a documentary in 2019.

It claimed that over 6 thousand greyhounds are killed every year in the sector.

CEO of Greyhound Racing Ireland, Gerard Dollard, says their reputation has been damaged.

"A lot of coverage of the greyhound industry over the last year, a lot of it is based on misinformation, a lack of understanding of the industry.

"Certainly in terms of the public perception there has been damage done."

Social Democrats agriculture spokesperson Holly Cairns has been leading the campaign to stop State supports for the sector.

The Cork South West TD refutes claims of 'misinformation' being spread.

"I've no doubt that many trainers treat their dogs well, and feel that as a result of the documentary and all of the information that we now know about about the industry has unfairly discredited some trainers.

"But none of that can justify what people do have a problem with, which is the state propping up an industry that kills 6,000 dogs a year."
