The government's being urged to reduce VAT on electricity and fuel without getting EU approval.

The European Commission's due to tell Ireland later this month whether it can cut the rates - which vary from 13.5 per cent to 23 per cent.

SSE Airtricity yesterday became the latest supplier to announce big increases in electricity and gas prices.

Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice says the government needs to take action immediately.
