The government is looking to make a number of changes to the State pension in the upcoming budget.

Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys says an increase on the 248 euro payment is one of her priorities.

Age Action are calling on a €15  a week increase in the allowance next month.

Nat O'Connell from the group says changing the pension age won't solve funding problems.

"Changing the pension age won't actually save enough money to pay for the pensions of the future.

"Like other countries we're going to have to look at the structure of our social insurance system, we're going to look at how we're going to afford this.

"There are lots of things we're going to have to do, but changing the pension ages seems like a quick and easy solution, but isn't the fix that people think it is."
